Mummies, Mudras and Madmen: In Search of God in the Mountains of Japan

My talk will be drawn from my current project on religious practice in contemporary Japan. I will describe some of my experiences in search of the spiritual meanings of the mountains of Japan. My material will range from Mount Kōya, home of Shingon Buddhism, to Shugendō, an ancient but still vital practice of mountain worship, to the practice of self-mummification in the mountains of Yamagata.

This lecture is free and open to the public. Parking information here.
